Lightning transient response of 400 kV transmission tower with associated grounding system
Tall structures such as transmission line towers, buildings and communication towers are frequently exposed to lightning strikes. A field theory method is used in this paper to examine the transient behaviour of a lightning strike on a process in transmission tower structure and associated grounding system. A 39 m transmission tower connected to two different grounding grids is studied. Injecting a 20 kA current surge having a double exponential pulse waveshape simulates the lightning strike that energises the conductor network. The transient electromagnetic fields near the base of the tower are computed and plotted. The current distribution in the tower and associated grounding system, the scalar potential and the electric and magnetic fields are obtained using the HIFREQ module from the CDEGS (Current Distribution, Electromagnetic Fields, Grounding and Soil Structure Analysis) software package
