14C and 3H as indicators of the environmental contamination
The influence of global 14C and 3H changes in the atmosphere was observed in three locations in Croatia in the areas with minimum anthropogenic influence. We measured 14C activity in the atmosphere, in tree-rings and in lake sediments as well as 3H in precipitation in the Plitvice National Park area. 14C and 3H in the atmosphere were measured at Medvednica Mt. and 3H in ice deposit found in the Ledenica Cave, Velebit Mt. Both 14C and 3H followed the global changes in the Northern Hemisphere. 14C activity in the recent lake sediments from two lakes as well as in dissolved inorganic carbon in water showed a damped response to atmospheric 14C contamination. The peak of 3H activity in the 45-m long ice deposit was found at the third meter from the surface. Our measurements showed that the response of environment to the 14C and 3H variations in the atmosphere depends on the complexity of natural processes that involve these isotopes.
