Ultrabasic Rocks as Potential Source of Inorganic Materials
Treatman with inorganic acids of ultrabasic rocks is the technique to obtain new and more useful inorganic products for industrial applications, such as adsorbents, catalysts, and catalyst carriers. Dissolution of cations from a crystal framework generally leads to formation of an amorphous hydrated silica with complete breakdown of original structure. However, inorganic acid treatment of some ultrabasic rocks is known to result in formation of a porous material with structure similar to that of the original mineral. The leaching of ultrabasic rocks by inorganic acid can lead to production of fine and pure magnesium oxide powder.
