Effect of iron additions to the aluminium-silicon eutectic alloys
The influence of iron on the microstructure and hardness of eutectic Al-Si alloys has been studied on the experimental samples. Ten Al-Fe-Si alloys with increasing iron content from 0.5 to 4.5 wt. % were prepared by induction melting of pure elements in Al2O3 crucibles under argon atmosphere. The microstructure of specimens was observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. It has been studied the formation of needle-formed crystals of Al-Fe-Si intermetallic compound and their progressive growth in eutectic with increasing iron content. The chemical composition of crystals was determined by the method of point analyses. The properties of the as-cast Al-Fe-Si alloys were evaluated on the basis of hardness measurements and microstructure characteristics.
