Effect of Cysteine and Methionine on the Corrosion of Tin in 3 percent Sodium Chloride Solution
The effect of cysteine and methionine on the electrochemical and corrosion behaviour of tin in salt solution was investigated. For this purpose, model salt solutions containing sodium chloride (3 wt %) and sodium chloride with cysteine / methionine, at the concentrations from 10-3 to 10-5 M, were prepared. The system was chosen to perform the corrosion processes which could take place in canned fish products. Electrochemical investigation was prepared using potentiostatic polarisation method. From the experimental data, the corrosion current, corrosion potential, and polarisation resistance were calculated. Redox potential, pH and electrical conductivity of test solutions were also determined. Both cysteine and methionine act as corrosion inhibitors. Methionine showed higher inhibition efficiency (with 96 % confidence) compared with cysteine (with 68 % confidence) for the anodic reaction.
