MER model of integral management: environmental management as a part of integral manageme

Enterprises of all sizes and belonging to all business sectors are challenged to create and increase business value by environmental responsible behaviour. The motives and ways of involvement into environmentally responsible activities differ, but it becomes evident that ad hoc approach should be replaced by proactive environmental management. In the paper we discuss some aspects of environmental management as a consistent part of integral management (the case of integral management like MER model). The attention is paid to the environmental dimension of enterprise performance, related to the nature as a critical stakeholder. The changing success paradigm emphasises the holistic perspective that takes into account besides profit also some other goals. They should be set in a hierarchy and well balanced. Their conflicting and complementary nature should be managed to maintain and improve enterprise's viability. The concept of sustainable development and the Triple Bottom Line Approach aim for sustainability and refer to the economic, environmental and broader social performance of so-called sustainable enterprise. They need a set of managerial tools (e.g. environmental indicators, benchmarking). Research findings of environmental responsibility of Slovenian SMEs illustrate some trends in the field of environmental management in Slovenia.
