Surface waves on Ag/V(100)
The electronic structure of 1-5 monolayer thick silver films on V(100) is investigated with scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and compared to the photoemission measurements. At room temperature, the appearence of standing waves is observed by STM at all film thicknesses. The Fourier transforms of the images are interpreted as surface Fermi contours. The 1 ML silver film shows particularly nicely developed contours with two strong isotropic contributions.. The obtained Ag/V(100) Fermi contours are explained in terms of hybridisation of the silver sp quantum well states and the vanadium d-band.
