Application of AOPs for Azo Dye Degradation
Due to the high content of organic matter and intensive colouration, even with low concentrations of dye, wastewater from the dye industry and dyehouses cannot be discharged to the recipients without prior treatment. The chemical decomposition of aqueous solutions of azo dyes C.I. Acid Orange 7 and C.I. Direct Orange 39 is studied by following Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs): Fenton, Fenton "like", ozonation, peroxone and Fenton in combination with activated carbon and zeolite NaY respectively. Spectrophotometric (UV/VIS) and total organic carbon (TOC) measurements were used for determination of process efficiency and reaction kinetics. The degradation rates are evaluated by determining their "pseudo" first-order rate constants. It was found that all AOPs were capable to completely bleach the azo dyes solutions whereas TOC and UV254 removal efficiencies ranged between 45-90% and 92-99.9% respectively. UV/VIS and TOC measurements before and after the treatment by AOPs showed whether the treated wastewater can be discharged into the environment or reused as technological water.
