Measurement Methods in Achieving Sustainable Tourism Development

Applying the concept of sustainable tourism development is essentially a four-stage process: defining and establishing the concept of sustainable tourism development, determining the conditions for sustainable tourism to be achieved, developing a framework for measuring progress towards sustainable tourism development and developing a set of methods to make sustainable tourism operational. The conceptual basis for sustainability has been established in the academic literature. The real challenge is to find appropriate techniques regarding the implementation of the concept ; it is time to move on to the most important issue of how to implement the concept. In the paper the problem of expressing the monetary values of the natural capital stock in tourism and appropriate methods will be discussed: the hedonistic pricing methods, the travel cost method and the contingent valuation method.
