Comparison of the Digital Pulse Width Modulation, Pulse Density Modulation and Delta Modulation Approaches for the Sine Wave Reference Generation

The generators of the sine wave reference are frequently used in industrial electronics, i.e. DC to AC conversion, motor speed control, measurement, etc. The most of them are realized as discrete (PCB) or integrated (ASIC) circuits, based on analog or Digital Pulse Width Modulation (DPWM) synthesis technique. Standard hardware or software DPWM concept, based on PCM sampled sine wave ROM look-up table (LUT), is appropriate for implementation in PLDs or ASICs with specialized ROM cells. Other alternative modulation concepts such as Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) and Delta Modulation (DM) are also feasible candidates for the sine wave reference generations, because those approaches can be even less gate and ROM-cell consuming. The paper analyses characteristics of the sine wave generators realized by all three modulation principles. Architectures of all three generators are compared, and their LUT models are built-in the PLD. It discusses the process of the cutoff frequency estimation for the given application. The three phase sine wave reference generator architectures are also discussed. Power spectrums are taken and shown together with oscillograms of the generated reference sine waves. The paper discusses benefits and penalties of using those modulation methods in generation of the sine wave reference.
