Verbotonal approach for the children with cochlear implant in public schools

Verbotonal Approach (VTA) combines both vestibular-auditory-speech input to maximize the neuroplaticity of the child's brain in order to establish normal spoken language and auditory memory skills. The treatment uses vestibular exercises, body movements, speech rhymes and situational play, along with vibrotactile and filtered speech input, so the child develops the normal proprioceptive and auditory memory patterns of speech. These treatment tools create the optimal learning conditions for child's speech perception and production. The optimal learning condition helps the child feel his mother's emotions, speech rhythms, and emotional bonding that provide the foundation for his ability to perceive the rhythm and intonation of speech, phonemes, words, and sentences. As performance outcome with the children with cochlear implant, a case study investigated the effectiveness of VTA to the children with the cochlear implant. This study evaluated the speech perception and production of the child with the cochlear implant. The result suggests that this child had good speech perception and production skill through VTA. This child was mainstreamed with regular classroom. VTA could be an effective cochlear implant program for the children with cochlear implant. A teacher-clinician, who is competent in using error analysis and the treatment tools of the VTA along with multidisciplinary team members can implement an effective treatment plan for each child with cochlear implant.
