Purpura fulminans treated with hyperbaric oxygenation
Background: Purpura fulminans is arare ans serious post-infectious disorder of childhood age, characterized by progressive symmetrical purpuric lesions of the skin, which eventually become necrotic. The pathophysilogy is associated with disseminated intravascular coagulation, small vessels thrombosis, and endothelial damage with extensive bleeding into soft tissues and skin, leading to acute peripheral ischaemia. This disorder is associated with a high rate of mortality and morbidity. Subjects: Two patients, 13 and 18 month old girls, woth purpura fulminans, are presented. Interventions: Patients were treated with hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO), anticoagulations, corticosteroids and substitutes of fibrogen, plasma, erythrocytes and surgeries in one girl. Results: The result of th etreatment was remarkable improvement in one and full recovery in the other girl. Conclusion: The response to treatment purpura fulminans with HBO is impressive. The central point to be dtressed is the importance of an early and immediate HBO.
