Economical use of solid wood panels
This paper describes the economical use of wood in producing solid wood panels as a semi product. The production and use of solid wood panels is small in comparison with the total production of wood panels in general, however solid wood panel demand is increasing daily. Their use ranges from the production of furniture, toys to stairway components and other elements of interior furnishing. The quality of the boards depends on their appearance and strength. The market usually requires high quality panels of equal texture and colour, however the influence of designers can result in the use of raw material that has until recently been deemed of a lesser value. Using the example of beech with red heart rot the importance of using defected wood defect in an economical use of solid wood panels is emphasised. World renowned designers have used this defect as an advantage to produce unique furniture and this should serve as incentive to Croatian designers when we consider the amount of raw material available.
