Comparative study of TE gases and DME in a proportional counter
Several tissue-equivalent (TE) gas mixtures are commonly used in microdosimetry measurements. Recently, it has been proposed that DME admixed with a small amount of N2 may be used as a TE gas. A comparative study of various parameters pf propane-based TE gas, isobutane, isobutane-based TE gas and DME in a proportional counter has been performed. The mean value and the statistical fluctuations of the gas amplification, energy resolution and W value are measured. From the measured gas amplification data, the first Townsend ionisation coefficient is determined. The results are compared with those for argon-isobutane mixtures.
