Influence of Pollution on Lipid Content and Fatty Acid Composition of Diplodus vulgaris, L. from the Adriatic Sea

The muscle tissue of a commercially important fish, the two-banded sea-bream Diplodus vulgaris, L. was analysed. Fish samples were obtained from two different sites: a polluted area strained by oil refinery discharges and an unpolluted referent area. The lipid content as well as the fatty acid composition of neutral (triglycerides-TG) and polar (phosphatidylethanolamine-PE, phosphatidylcholine-PC, phosphatidylinositol/phosphatidylserine-PIPS) lipid classes was determined. The total lipid content was higher in fish samples obtained from the referent area (1, 13 ± ; ; ; ; 0, 27 %) compared to those from the polluted site (0, 74 ± ; ; ; ; 0, 44 %). We identified 16 different fatty acids. The fatty acid profile was more favourable in fish samples from the referent area, containing more mono-, di- and poly- unsaturates. Unsaturation indexes in polar lipid classes were also higher for fish samples originating from the referent site. Statistically significant differences (p<0, 05) were found in the content of C20:0, C20:4, C20:5, C22:3 and C22:6 in polar lipid fractions. The results of our study suggest that water pollution can impact the lipid content and contribute to the desaturation of fatty acids in different lipid fractions. It was also shown that D. vulgaris, L. from the Adriatic Sea is a good source of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids which are known for their beneficial effects on human health.
