Serum Dipeptidyl Peptidase IV (DPP IV/CD26) Activity in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
The aim of this study was to determine the dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV/CD26) activity in serum obtained from children affected with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The study was performed on 31 children with IBD (Crohn's disease, CD: n=24 ; ulcerative colitis, UC: n=7). The control group included 46 healthy children. CD activity was evaluated by using the Paediatric Crohn´s Disease Activity Index [PCDAI]. Serum DPP IV activity in children with active CD (62, 70 +/- 19, 77 U/L) was significantly decreased compared with healthy controls (84, 87 +/- 24, 30 U/L), (p<0, 05). A decreased activity of serum DPP IV in children with UC (78, 88 +/- 21, 16 U/L) has also been found. The levels of DPP IV activity in CD patients were inversely correlated with the PCDAI score. The obtained results suggest the possibility that the determination of the soluble DPP IV activity may be useful in the diagnosis of Crohn's disease.
