Structural Characterization of Mercury(II) Compounds with 3-Hydroxy-picolinic Acid

Hg(II) ion as a soft Lewis acid forms covalent compounds with soft Lewis bases such as S-donor or N-donor groups. Therefore we investigated coordination of Hg atom in compounds with derivatives of picolinic acid (OH-picH). In the structure HgCl(OH-picH) mercury atom is linearly coordinated by N an Cl atoms. The carboxylate group from ligand acts as bridging group in the formation of zig-zag chains which are interconnected to layers with two additional contacts so the effective coordination of mercury can be described as 2+4. 1H and 13C NMR spectra were also used in characterisation of this compound.
