The effectiveness of Malaise traps and canopy traps for the collection of Tabanidae (Diptera)
Two types of traps were evaluated for their efficiency in the collection of horse flies (Tabanidae). Specific trap designs affected on the numbers of horse flies collected and the species representation. A total of 10539 horse flies belonging to 5 genera and 22 species was collected. Horse flies were collected in significantly higher numbers in canopy traps than in Malaise traps. Factors that mostly influenced the collections were the size and shape of the trap opening and the overall size of the trap. Finally, the canopy traps collected 65 times more horse flies than Malaise traps.
