Status and potentials of biomass in Croatia
In Croatia bioenergy contributed with 5.1 per cent of the total energy supply in 1998. Historically, biomass has been used by the rural population in a large scale for heating and cooking in all Croatian regions. Heating wood and commercial and non-commercial cutting of woodlans amounted to 15 per cent of primary energy consumption in 1970 whereas, due to urbanisation and growth of living standars, the corresponding value in 1990 was 5.3 per. cent. Almost 44% of the area of Croatia is covered by forests, developed agriculture and wood industry, and thus biomass hass a great potential as a source of renewable energy. The total tehnical energy potential of biomass for energy production in Croatia was estimated to be 33, 8 PJ/a in 1995. The most significant source of biomass for energy production is wood mass from forests (fuel wood, forest residues and wood waste from wood processing industry). However, agricultural residues have a significant energy potential in both Eastern Croatia and the coastal zone. The possibilities of biomass production of selected clones and half-sibs of soft broadleaved trees in short rotations, as well as of the Aleppo pine biomass, are optimal in Croatia when considering the production potentials of habitats and selected plant material. Moreover, further improvements by means of various breading methods are also possible.
