Multiculturality in Croatian Education
The paper presents a brief socio-historic review of the Croatian educational system in ethnically and culturally plural society during the 19th and 20th century in order to illustrate the presence of certain contents that appeared in later formulated principles of the multiculturalist (if not interculturalist) approach to education. Putting the results of the analysis of the school laws and curricula in suitable social and historical context provides a logical bridge for making inferences. Apart from the conclusions concerning social origins of the changes in the regulation of ethnic differences in Croatian educational system, the aim of the paper is to discuss and/or to open the discussion on the following topics: Under which circumstances and in which forms did some countries develop the ethnic and cultural plurality in education during the period predominately characterised by the modernisation pattern of national homogenisation? Is it possible to learn from these experiences and use that knowledge in the construction of the European citizenship and social cohesion through education? What would be the role and the limits of education in preparing for living together within ethnic and the cultural diversities?
