Nitrous oxide reduces venous bubble formation after simulated dive in hyperbaric chamber
Introduction: We previously determined that a single bout of a strenuous exercise protocol reduces occurrence of free floating venous bubbles comparing to sedentary controls. The aim of this study was to investigate whether exogenous application of the nitrous oxide (NO) can impact number of venous gas bubbles. Materials and Methods: A total of three, healthy scuba diver volunteers were tested in this series of experiments. They were compressed to 18 meters for 75 minutes in hyperbaric chamber with and without prior sublingual (oral spray) application of NO donor. After the simulated dive, subjects were placed in supine position and their right atrium was monitored with an ultrasonic scanner every 20 minutes for the 80 minutes after reaching surface pressure. Results: We found that in healthy volunteers application of the NO prior to the simulated diving reduces the number of the occurring venous gas bubbles. Conclusion: Further investigations with larger number of participants are needed to confirm present findings. In general, one has to consider use of NO donor (perhaps as nutritional additive) in scuba diver population as a measure for preventing decompression sickness. Cautious approach is needed in order to avoid misuse of potent drugs by divers.
