Characterisation of Incontinence Diaper Efficiency
To determine efficiency of the diapers in end-use, simulation procedures imitating use in everyday practice were employed. Testing liquid flow through the sample (run-off) and the determination of the liquid absorption capacity (simulation urine) were done under pre-determined conditions. A few standardised and unstandardised methods were used in the process and appropriate equipment designed and constructed to fulifil the conditions of the methods. Diapers of a number of manufacturers were included in testing. Their raw material content, composition and construction were determined and characterised. All the products tested consisted of three layers of material, and raw material content of individual layers in different products did not vary to much (polyethylene/cotton combination, with an active component added). The impact of raw material content, composition and construction on the usability of the diapers was investigated on various diaper samples. Adequacy and selectivity of the testing equipment were tested simultaneously with the evaluation of end-use properties of the diapers.
