Numerical Optimisation of Mechanical Reinforcements of Weak Spots in Textiles and Clothes
Due to stress concentration, the vicinity of geometric irregularities is exposed to fatigue, damage and rupture and needs mechanical reinforcement. In clothing technology, a buttonhole reinforcement is a typical example. A mechanical reinforcement can be designed in a systematic way using optimisation strategies. In this work, an iterative algorithm for minimum search based on parabolic approximations is proposed and applied in the optimisation of mechanical reinforcement in a problem of a buttonhole type. A minimum of an objective function, corresponding to the acceptable balance of the opposed criteria of stress and cost, reveals the reinforcement parameter argued to be optimal. Stress computation is done using the finite element method.
