Fatigue life assessment of welded ship structural details : Part 1 : Theoretical outline

During the last 15 years, fatigue life assessment of ship structural details has become an important part of the design procedure. The paper presents an attempt to review state-of-the-art in this interesting and propulsive field of scientific research. Reasons for more frequent fatigue cracks occurrence in ship structures are analysed. All the steps that fatigue damage estimation procedure is comprised of are decribed in detail. Special attention is given to the hot-spot S-N curve approach which is currently in dominant use for fatigue life assessment.
