Determination of design wave bending moments by hydrodynamic analysis
The aim of the paper is to describe principal steps and results of calculation of design vertical wave bending moments by direct hydrodynamic and statistical analysis. The analysis has been performed for the Stena P-max product tanker since the ship has a length-to-beam ratio below the limit of validity of the Rules for ordinary merchant ships. Therefore, direct computation of the wave bending moments has been required by the relevant Classification Society. The analysis has been performed in accordance to IACS Recommendation for direct calculation of extreme wave loads. For the hydrodynamic analysis the program WAVESHIP, based on the linear strip theory has been used. For the subsequent statistical analysis, the program POSTRESP has been employed. Both programs are parts of SESAM package for hydrodynamic and statistical analysis of marine structures. Attention has also been given to proper correction of non-linear effects (Sag and Hog).
