Simulating one-dimensional contaminant transport in the unsaturated zone of a karst polje with VS2DT model-problems, limitations and advantages
VS2DT model was used for one-dimensional reactive and no reactive solute transport simulation of nitrate, ammonia and nickel through the unsaturated zone of the Vransko Polje near Biograd. The polje is covered with the thick Quaternary pond and lake deposits. A composition of deposits is: sand, silt, clay, fragments of bedrock and shells of lake fauna. The VS2DT is equipped with a limited database of soil materials and that was very limiting for the Vransko Polje case. The model has allowed making several decisions regarding initial conditions, soil hydraulic function, and it has also allowed which types of processes (adsorption or ion exchange) would be simulated in a soil profile. As a result, simulated values of chosen parameters fitted poorly with the measured values.
