Thermal properties of TPU/PP blends
Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) are becoming more and more important as engineering materials because of their exellent elastomeric properties. The object of this study was the investigation the thermal properties and thermal stability of the pure thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), pure polypropylene (PP) and their blends TPU/PP.The studies were made using TPU/PP blend ratio range of 20/80 and 80/20. Blends and TPU and PP in their pure form were prepared using a laboratory twin screw extruder (Haake Record 90). Compatibility of the TPU/PP blends was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This will measure the glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature of the TPU, PP and TPU/PP blends. One of the methods used to improve heat resistence of TPU is the chemical modification of their structure by the introduction of thermaly stable polymers. The thermal stability of the blends and the pure components were evaluated using thermogravimetrig analysis (TGA). The obtained DSC results show that the TPU/PP blends are partially miscible. Thermogravimetric analysis results show that the incorporation of PP into TPU causes an increase in thermal stability of TPU.
