Optimization of free-energy transduction when maximal entropy production is required in irreversible transitions: example of bacterial photosynthesis
We considered a macromolecule cycling among discrete states in the steady state. As an example the photon free-energy input is converted into proton-motive power by the bacterial reaction center and cytochrome bc1 complex. The general criterion is derived when entropy production can become maximal with respect to the optimal value of forward rate constant in irreversible charge transfer steps. The optimal values of thermodynamic parameters are found to be close to observed values in reconstituted liposomal systems.
