Analysis of some Adriatic populations of Podarcis sicula using RAPD markers
Croatian part of Adriatic coast was probably colonized by P. sicula from Italy. A distinctive trait of P. sicula distribution is that it is absent on the mainland between Makarska and Dubrovnik, but present on the smaller southern islands Palagruža, Sušac and islets to the west of Lasove island, as well as on a small region around Dubrovnik. These regions are thought to have been founded by two over-water colonizations from Italy, but over-water colonization from hte Croatian coast is also possible. In order to test these hypothesis, four land and three insular populations of P. sicula and some populations of P. melisellensis were analysed using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Intra- and interpopulations as well as intraspecific genetic variability and genetic distances were calculated. Phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using the neighbor joining method. Based on htese estimaters, relations between land and island populations, founder effect in insular populations and the possible history of collonization of Croatian coast and southern islands with P. sicula are discussed.
