The impact of tram traffic volume on the mechanical properties of the rail pads
The elasticity of a track is the most significant factor in the load transmission from the track to the lower parts of the structure. The required elasticity of track structures carried out on the concrete base is achieved by applying elastic elements (rail pads) built-in between the rail and the base. Rail pads discussed in the paper are applied with the fastening system Zg 3/2. Until 1997 the mentioned system was used for approximately 60 km of tram tracks in Zagreb. Therefore, a requirement emerged to define the time optimisation of the rail pads replacement to retain the needed track elasticity, and through it to extend the lifetime of structure. There is the traffic volume of up to 15 million gross tons a year (MGT/year) at some tram track sections in the city of Zagreb. It is quite important to that determine after how many million gross tons should the pads be replaced. If it is not done, the tram track structure will deteriorate, along with all the negative effects on the vehicle and comfort of the tram ride.
