Education in Ion Chromatography

Education related to ion chromatography on graduated and post graduated study in south eastern part of Europe is mainly incorporated in few chapters of following subjects: Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Methods in Analytical Chemistry and Applied Mathematic and Statistic. That knowledge is a good base for the beginners in ion chromatography laboratory, but further education is certainly needed to accomplish advanced level which can guarantee solution of majority of problems in everyday routine analysis. For that purpose "International School of Ion Chromatography" is being organized by University of Zagreb, Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Croatia (prof. Š. Cerjan - Stefanović) and National Institute for Chemistry, Slovenia (dr. Milko Novič) as a part of whole life education program. Seven education seminars were organised since 1999. in Croatia and Slovenia with approximately 70 participants form south eastern part of Europe per seminar. This study explains organisation, conduction and results of International School of Ion Chromatography program in south east Europe. International School of Ion Chromatography incorporates education related to hardware and software of the instruments with possibility of installation of ion chromatography system into the participant laboratory and its implementation in every day work routine analysis. Open contact between laboratories from industry and practice and professional personal of organizators enables immediate intervention and solution of problems related to instruments and applications of ion chromatography. Incorporated computer assisted work shops provides basic and advanced knowledge about statistic, validation and optimization strategies, and inter laboratory tests insures quality control of the ion chromatographic analysis. It is shown that such activities results with significant increase in ion chromatography analysis results quality.
