Diabetes mellitus and skin
Diabetes mellitus can be associated with numerous skin alterations that may develop consequentially to metabolic or structural disturbances. Skin alterations in diabetes can be classified into four groups: disease markers 8skin alterations characteristic of but not specific for diabetes mellitus), skin alterations due to diabetes complications, dermatologic complications of diabetes treatment, and endocrine syndromes with skin alterations and diabetes mellitus. In addition, various skin infections tend to be more frequent and/or more serious in poorly controlled diabetes. Health education of diabetics should always include instructions on appropriate skin care. With these measures, the morbidity from not only cutaneous, but also from other diabetes complications can be substantially reduced.
