There is not enough good tanac dancing without good sopela players!: The interrelationship between musicians and dancers on the Island of Krk, Croatia
The role of the sopela instrument players - sopci on the Island of Krk is very important. That becomes very obvious during the dance tanac. The whole dance events are oriented according to the positions of the sopela players. They always use to sit on the same place at the squares as the main venues for the most important social and dance events in the villages on the Island. The space in front of the sopci, people use to call "the top of the square", and that is the place where is possible to observe the most significant behaviour of all the participants in dance, and all the changes of figures and improvisations in dance tanac are going on here. Depending on the dance qualities of each couple of dancers in tanac dance, sopela players are ready to play longer for variations and improvisations in dance or they can shorten the time for the particular couple that does not dance quite well. The relationship between all the performers is deeply interwoven into the whole dance event, the same as into a social life of the communities on the Island in general.
