Strategic partnerships as a key competitive factor for SMEs: Case study of Croatia's small family hotels
There is undoubtedly today a consensus as to the importance of SMEs to national economies and social well-beings. A broad variety of national and international programs and pilot projects exist today across Europe stimulating the shift toward SMEs in general and toward tourism and hospitality SMEs in particular. Croatia's emerging SME sector faxes a double burden: problems inherent to SMEa anywhere in the world and a still prevalently 'lip-service' support at home. This is the context in which in a unique, 'bottom-' effort, a number of small hotel owners, aided by international and domestic agencies, initiated the strategic partnership: The Association of Family and Small Hotels of Croatia. The article overviews international trends as pertaining to the development of SMEs, examines the country's hotel industry and, in this light interprets the development of The Association of Family and Small Hotels as Croatia's first SME strategic partnership.
