World Heritage Site, tourism and city’ s rejuvenation: The case of Poreč, Croatia
Many destinations, especially along the Mediterranean coast, are devising a number of strategies aimed at diversifying their product base in order to stimulate through the year demand. For these endowed with rich historical and cultural heritage, development of cultural tourism is a viable option. Such is the case with the Croatian town of Poreč, situated in the north Adriatic peninsula of Istria, where the Basilica Euphrasiana Episcopal Complex is located which is, since 1997, listed in the UNESCO’ s World Heritage list. The aim of this paper is to outline opportunities that such class of monuments offers not only for the tourism sector but also for the community in general. It discusses the extent to which the Basilica can provide impetus to achieve the coordinated cultural development but also rejuvenate the entire historical core of the city that is, outside the season, deserted by Poreč’ s residents.
