Geographic information systems and control objectives for information & related technology usage opportunities

This paper deals with the Control Objectives for Information & Related Technology (COBIT&reg ; ) usage opportunities and its usage to balance the cooperation of some space control oriented business system and GIS. COBIT&reg ; is discussed as a tool which can effectively manage the union between business processes and a supporting information system. Mentioned are series of business processes like cadastre offices land registration offices, transport, forestry, meteorology etc., which are all supported by GIS. The management of the union between business processes and supporting information system is done by using 4 groups of COBIT's Control Objectives. There are 34 high-level control objectives, which are extended to 318 specific low-level control objectives. Each of the 34 high-level control objectives will defined by its goal, respective information criteria (seven) and IT resources (five) to which it is applicable. The paper concludes with a diagram which illustrates the COBIT's concept. In order to provide the GIS information that the business processes need in order to achieve their goals, the business organization has to use IT governance. This will ensure that IT resources are managed by four groups of COBIT's high-level control objectives and so are able to leverage business competitiveness.
