Architecture of an Energy Independent House in the County Splitsko Dalmatinska

The concept of an energy independent house intended for rural tourism on islands represents a model for designing houses in rural areas lacking a developed utility infrastructure network. The high quality of construction and a high level of the external building envelope (including the orientation of the house and an adequate relationship between the surface area and the building’ s volume) have reduced transmission and ventilation losses to a minimum. Additional insulation of the external building envelope raises the construction costs by 10-12 per cent and reduces heat losses through the house’ s envelope tenfold (from approximately 150 kWh/m2 a year to less than 15 kWh/m2). The use of renewable energy sources for heating and electricity increases the costs of installing the energy supply system in the house and makes the construction in general more expensive by some 30 per cent. However, taking into account that no conventional heating system (and associated maintenance costs) is any longer necessary, that annual heat consumption of such a house is below 15 kWh/m2 (total energy consumption is below 40 kWh/m2), the concept of a house self-sufficient in terms of energy becomes absolutely cost-effective in the short and in the long run. The system is even more cost-effective if such houses are grouped in villages or settlements of 8-10 houses, when the major part of the energy supply system may be provided from a central source.
