Gonadal Dysgenesis and Teeth Asymmetry

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of the X chromosome on the presence of teeth asymmetry in the sample of 40 female patients with different types of Turner syndrome (TS) and 36 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome (KS), and a control group, numbering 80 healthy subjects. The crown morphological features were scored on dental plaster casts using the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASU). The mesiodistal (MD), buccolingual (BL) and cervicoincisal (CI) crown diameter of permanent teeth (except third molars) were measured from dental plaster casts with the calliper 0.10-mm gradation. The results of morphological features were analysed through χ 2 test, i.e. Fisher’ s exact test, whereas the crown diameter and asymmetry patterns were analysed through t-test. Intra and interobserver concordance (K-O I.) in classifying dental morphology was done according to Nichol C. R., and Turner C. G. In the TS group, statistically significant asymmetry was detected in morphological features of the upper lateral incisors interruptive groove (p=0.005), and of the upper molars hypocone and metaconule (p<0.05) as well as (MD) diameters of tooth crowns of upper second molars (p<0.001), lower incisors, first and second premolars (p<0.001). KS group demonstrated asymmetry in morphological features of the upper molars metacone, and asymmetry of diameters of the upper first premolar (CI, p<0.001) and lower canine crowns (MD, BL). The X chromosome aneuploidy can cause a decrease in developmental homeostasis, which results in the alteration of morphological features and crown diameters, as well as a greater asymmetry of teeth.
