Flavonoid differentiation of Croatian endemic species Iris illyrica Tomm. and I. pseudopallida Trinajstić (Iridaceae)
Although there are several recent studies that support opinion about a separated taxonomical status of the species Iris illyrica Tomm. and I. pseudopallida Trinajstić, these two taxa have been mostly considered as only one species, I. illyrica, or as different lower taxonomic categories within different species of the genus Iris. Since the characteristics of the flavonoids have been successfully used for the clarification of the taxonomic and classificatory problems in many taxonomic groups, the aim of this research was to determine the relationships among I. illyrica and I. pseudopallida using their flavonoid patterns. Methanolic extracts of the leaves of 20 plants for each population were submitted to TLC and reversed phase HPLC analyses. Significant quantitative differences in the leaf flavonoid patterns between I. illyrica and I. pseudopallida were obtained. This result supports opinion about a separate taxonomical status of I. illyrica and I. pseudopallida and leads to the conclusion that the flavonoid compositions could be useful for a future clarification of the taxonomic difficulties within and among different species of the genus Iris L.
