Trend of Fish Catches in Croatia and Other Mediterranean Countries
The aim of the present study is to compare the annual statistical data of the fish catches in Croatia, Mediterranean and the whole world for the period 1992-1995. The choise of the period was limited by a disponibility of statistical data. However, it starts as start the croatian official fishery statistics and it stops only temporarily in 1995. In fact, this study is just a beginning of a longer permanent study, as an integrating part of the permanent research activity in the Institute for Agriculture and Tourism. Negative trend of catches in Croatia was observed, despite of an continuous increase in the Mediterranean countries and the world. Compared to the marine catches in Mediterranean, Croatia covered 1.65% of the total catches in 1992 and decreased slowly reaching 0.80% in 1995. It is very difficult in this preliminary phase of the study to conclude or predict the reasons of the negative trend in Croatia, however analysing the situation is the first step in understanding and creating a sustainable fishery policy.
