English compound nouns with a verbal element and their counterparts in Croatian
A distributional analysis of English compound nouns with a verbal element in the corpus shows an almost exact number of V-PP and S-V compounds, and a slightly smaller number of V-O compounds. This is not entirely representative of their actual frequency in the language corpus. Croatian counterparts fall into 6 basic categories: single word equivalents, Adj-N, N-N, N-Prep-N equivalents, compounds, and complex noun phrases. The majority of NCV’ s had single word equivalents, Adj-N came second, followed by N-N ad N-Prep-N equivalents. Equivalent compounds were found very rarely. This is consistent with the productivity and the frequency of occurrence of compounds in Croatian.
