Differences in calcium metabolism between men with urolithiasis and controls
In order to assess a possible metabolic disorder, a comprehensive metabolic evaluation of 26 patients with urolithiasis (mean age 39.1 +/- 6.2 years) was performed. Control group comprised 18 healthy men (Mean age 35.0 +/- 7.1 years). Biochemical analysis included fasting blood and urine samples. The most common metabolic abnormalities were increased level of urinary oxalate and calcium and uric acid in serum. There were ten patients with hyperoxaluria and six with hypercalciuria. PTH was normal in patients and controls. We may conclude that metabolic disorders are important characteristic of urolithiasis, but rarely the single cause of stone formation.
