Effects of maternal smoking on metals in the placenta
The objective of this study was to asses exposure of pregnant women (smokers and nonsmokers) in urban population of city of Zagreb to toxic metals and potential health risk for unborn child using placenta as an indicator organ. The results showed that a pregnant woman who smokes exposes herself and her placenta to higher cadmium and lead concentrations then does the nonsmoker. These findings could be causally related to decreased birth weights of smoking mothers' neonates.
