Population dynamics of grey mullet, Liza (Liza) ramada (Risso, 1826) from the Middle Adriatic (Šibenik Bay)
A study of population dynamic characteristics of the grey mullet, Liza (Liza) ramada (Risso, 1826) was carried out over a period of one year in Šibenik Bay. Grey mullet was the most abundant species of the mullet catches in the area of the Šibenik Bay. The total length distribution, length-length and length-weight relationship, growth parameters, instantaneous rate of total, natural and fishing mortalities, rate of exploitation, rate of survival, including the observation of sexual cycle and migratory behaviour were carried out. Mild negative allometry was established (b=2.931) in length-weight relationship. Theoretical growth curve of this species was estimated according to Casie's (1954) and Bhattachary's (1967) methods carrying into von Bertalanffy equation the values of Linf=52.5 cm and 52.7 cm respectively ; K=0.25 and 0.3 respectively as well as t0=-0.1. Results point out the relatively slow growth of grey mullet. Stock assessment and maximum sustainable yield (MSY) were carried out by three quantitive approaches: combined VPA and cohort analysis, global production model and VPA. These quantitative approaches gave very similar amounts of grey mullet in the Šibenik bay (110 and 120 tons respectively).
