Adriatic-Dinaridic Mesozoic Carbonate Platform, Environments and Facies from Permian to Recent Time - Field Trip Guide Book

Mesozoic Adriati-Dinaridic carbonate platform, a unique geological formation developed along the passive continental margin of Gondwana stands among other similar units in the world by size and diversity of sedimentary facies. It stretches along the present Adriatic coast as External Dinarides, known also as High Karst Zone. It is a part of the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt, which existance started in Permian time and terminated in Paleogene, and then uplifted in Neogene time. Interesting phenomena related to karst geomorphology owe their names, used in international karst terminology, to local toponyms, like doline and polje. Even a term karst came after kras or krš. Great deal of points of interest are situated on the pearl of Adriatic islands, inhabited since prehistoric time by fishermen, peasants, sailors, dwelling in small villages with picturesque architecture. Fascination scenery of the white rocky coast with garlands of olives, vineyards, and drapery of conifers around old stony villages, embraced by emerald green-blue water of Adriatic, gives a visual joy to the geological and cultural program. The trip is not focused on sedimentology exclusively. It will show very special sites, like dinosaur tracks, carbonate platform foundation or distraction, recent carbonate deposition in temporal climate condition, one of the huge karst springs bringing on the sunlight green river, river delta and marsh-lands in a young immature karst topography, civil engineering achievements and national parks with variety of unique flora and fauna. The trip will be performed by a ship along the coast and islands from Istria to Dubrovnik primarily with short excursion on the mainland by bus.
