Imagery in phraseology
Phraseology of a language is without a doubt an aspect of language that is by far the richest in imagery. Images serve as mechanisms for idiom comprehension, even in cases of idioms that are opaque at first sight. The ability to understand modified idioms serves as a further confirmation of this claim. The paper discusses mechanisms at play in the comprehension of idioms and idiom modifications, using examples from the British National Corpus in support of statements. It identifies underlying mechanisms at play in the creation of idiom modifications and argues that users subconsciously activate and apply the same mechanisms in the process of understanding idioms.
