Micronuclei monitoring of mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, from Kaštela bay, Croatia.
Marine genotoxicity monitoring of the Kaštela bay in Croatia was conducted as a part of the CROWAT project. This three-year project aims to develop a biomonitoring system suitable for Croatian marine and freshwater ecosystems. Genotoxic burden of the marine environment was assessed through change in the frequency of micronuclei (MN) in haemocytes of mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Native mussels were collected from different locations in the Kaštela bay and from a reference site in the National park Mljet. During the second year of our study accidental oil spillage (7th January 2002) from the nearby factory occurred. Mussels from the two nearest stations were sampled two weeks after the incident and micronuclei were counted. The mean MN frequencies in mussels from the Kaštela bay was in most cases higher than in those from the reference site and additional increase in MN frequencies after the accident was also evident.
