Dietary habits and exercising in Croatian university students

Health experts recommend merging a healthy diet and adequate physical activity into one behavior. Physical wellness, including behaviors such as exercise and dietary habits is important to address during the years of education, as this time period is critical in the development of a healthy lifestyle. The aim of this study was to determine if there exist clustering of dietary habits and recreational physical activity in Croatian university students. Specially designed self-administered Food Frequency Questionnaire was used. Additional questions provided information on recreational physical activity. Body weight and body height were self-reported. Students from all five Croatian universities were included (n=2421, what is 2, 7% of all university students in Croatia). Mean age was 21.7 &#177; 3.34 years (mean &#177; SD). Results showed that Croatian university students on average have 2.8 hours of recreational physical activity per week, where significant difference was observed with regard to gender (4.3 and 1.5 hours per week in males and females respectively). Recreational physical activity reported 46.0% of students. Hours per week of recreational physical activity and Body Mass Index did not correlated significantly (r=0.15) ; significant correlation was observed for hours per week of recreational physical activity and body weight (r=0.24, p<0.02). Hours per week of recreational physical activity did not correlated with number of breakfasts per week, number of meals per day and weekly consumption frequency of fruit, vegetables and milk and dairy products. When compared students who do not have recreational physical activity with those who do exercise, significant difference was observed for consumption frequency of fast food and number of meals per day where more desirable values were in students who do have recreational physical activity. In conclusion, this study did not show strong clustering of recreational physical activity and dietary habits that are regarded as healthy.
