Well design for subsurface injection of drilling and industrial waste

A liquid drilling or industrial waste subsurface injection into downhole suitable strata may become a practicable solution for disposal of waste fluids that are, in normal circumstances, pollutants and a threat to environment. Many technical problems emerged from direct application of oilfield technology to subsurface disposal of liquid and industrial wastes. In this paper technical and technological solutions of waste fluids disposal into existing "dry-hole" wells are discussed as well as the possibility of planning a new well. One of the most important tasks of a waste disposal well is that it must be designed for complete protection of aquifers near the surface through which the well is drilled The well is completed in the disposal zone in one of many methods depending on the nature of the formation and the waste intended for disposal. Presuming well documented lithology (from logs, cores and other data from offset wells, used to identifx potential injection zones), well design for tubular and annular injection is shown. Numerous parametere and limitations define whether the injection will be performed above or below the formation fracturing pressure. For example, welhead and surface equipment pressure ratings, state and ratings of tubular equipment existing in the hole, injection formation and confining sealing formation characteristics and other may be crucial in making a decision on how and when to perform particular injection method.
