Indicators of oxidative stress in impaired glucose tolerance and newly-detected non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
Backgrounds and Aims: Oxidative stress and diabetes, particularly when accompanied by advanced chronic complications, are a subject of numerous investigations. The aim of this study was to establish wheather there are differences in indicators of oxidative stress in persons with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and newly detected non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) in comparison with healthy controls. Materials and Methods: The study included 117 persons referred by their general practitioners for metabolic evaluation... Results: No statistically significant difference was found for any of the investigated oxidative stress parameters in the studied groups as compared to the control group. Conclusion: The investigated of oxidative stress indicate that oxidative stress is not present in IGT and newly detected NIDDM. Moreover, we might conclude that oxidative stress does not precede NIDDM.
